Poems

These are some of my favorite poems by Sunay Akın, whose poems take attention with their shortness and word arrangements...

SEPERATION
We're like two
rails of a railroad
what matters if
the last station
is near
*(My favorite)

SCREWDRIVER
As so many nuclear bombs
continue to be fixed with screws
the only hope
against armament
left in the hands of the people
is the screwdriver

THE MONUMENT
It is only me who knows
that all the birds
in the world
migrate
in order to piss on
the monuments of the dictators

THE WINDOW
The newly-wed bride
keeps her window ajar
so the smell of her meals
in the evening
covers the whole neighbourhood.

WHITE
He was black
and those shooting him were white
the birds taking off to the sky
startled by the gunshot
were pure white

Beyond Time

BEYOND TIME

I am
not within time,
nor entirely beyond;
but in the flux
of an all-embracing, complete, indivisible moment.

All forms in a trance
of strange dream-tones,
even a windblown feather
is not as light as I.

My head a vast mill,
grinding out silence;
my heart a dervish
naked of cloak or goatskin,
who has reached his desire.

I perceive
the world become
a creeping ivy, rooted in me;
I swim at the centre
of a deep blue light.

Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar, 1933

Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar is one of my favorite Turkish writers. His poems as well as his books are great but his masterpiece is ' The Time Regulation Institute', which is my favorite book in Turkish literatue. It's a novel with great reflections. Besides, the theme is very very interesting in which a man establishes an institute that will check whether watches and clocks in the whole country show the correct time, and if not they will regulate them. It's funny but also makes you think...Well, I will not tell you more so that you can read and see by yourself. It's fantastic, I recommend you to read it.

Kudüs, Jerusalem, Al-Quds, Yerushalayim

I read in Wikipedia that Jerusalem which means 'Kudüs' in Turkish is used in Arabic as 'Al-Quds' and in Hebrew as 'Yerushalayim'.

In Arabic, it means 'The Holiness' and in Hebrew it means 'City of Peace'.

I just wonder if there is any other city in the world witnessing such events that contradicts with the meaning of its name that much...
